Joint press release by the Senate Chancellery - Science and Research and the State Conference of Rectors and Presidents of Berlin Universities (LKRP)

Berlin, 15th December 2020

The Senate Chancellery - Science and Research and the Berlin universities have agreed on further measures as part of the Berlin step-by-step plan for university operations under pandemic conditions in order to take into account the universities' overall social responsibility for reducing contacts and the risk of infection. As early as October 20, 2020, both sides agreed to largely forego face-to-face teaching events in the week before Christmas and after New Year's Eve. This agreement will now be further adapted:

Practical medical formats of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin that cannot be postponed are still possible.
Scientific libraries are only allowed to offer online services and loan operations from December 16, 2020 to January 10, 2021.

The universities are thus still in stage two of the three-stage Berlin graded plan and can continue to grant their employees, scientists and artists access to their workplaces. In principle, it is already the case that for the 2020/2021 winter term, state, private and denominational universities, including their institutions, may not be opened to the general public. They are to carry out their teaching in online formats and not in face-to-face teaching. The current ordinance allows exceptions for practice formats that cannot be carried out digitally, such as in the arts, as well as for examinations in compliance with the basic obligations, the protection and hygiene rules.
